Our Materials

It’s taken us years to study, source, and curate the materials that come together to make LANE EIGHT trainers. Many companies try to make their product more sustainable without sacrificing quality — we want to go further. We’re setting out to make our product 100% sustainable while improving the quality.

Recycled plastic bottles (11 bottles per pair of AD 1s to be exact) are used to create our knit uppers. This process starts with single-use plastic bottles, which are shredded and turned into yarn, which then become our signature uppers. If you’ve ever worn our trainers, you already know how game-changingly cozy and supportive this material is.

From left to right: Algae sludge, Algae flakes, Algae powder, and Algae pellets ready to be turned into cushy midsoles.

BLOOM Foam is an algae-based material that we use to craft our midsole. Algae is harvested as a slide, and from there its processed into flakes, then powder, and finally into pellets that we turn into our midsoles. Not only does this high-tech innovation help give our shoes their famous energetic bounce and unmatched comfort, it also returns 31.5 liters of fresh water back to the environment and removes 64 cubic meters of carbon from the atmosphere (for each pair made!)

The HIIT Trainer features a plant-based upper made with eucalyptus and cotton fibers. Sustainably sourced wood and cotton is processed by TENCEL and turned into a yarn that is then knit to become the HIIT Trainer’s uppers. Smooth to the touch, moisture-wicking, and ultra-breathable, Tencel allows us to create super functional, supportive uppers while lowering our carbon footprint and reducing our reliance on petroleum-based materials.

Eucalyptus + Cotton = The HIIT Trainer’s supportive, breathable upper.

What Else?

Just as exciting as the natural and recycled products that go into our shoes are the products that you won’t find in them: animal products. The entire LANE EIGHT range is free of animal products and completely vegan.

We know sustainability goes beyond shoes. We’re on a journey toward making all the elements of our business as conscious as possible. One of the biggest waste contributors is packaging. Something as small and seemingly insignificant as shoe boxes can have a massive environmental impact, which is why it was important that our shoe boxes be made from 100% post-consumer recycled content. Just as important is the packaging that goes around the box when we ship our shoes out to you. We’ve partnered with Invisible Co. on LANE EIGHT mailer bags that are water-soluble, compostable, biodegradable, and non-toxic. See it in action here!
